What makes you come to this forum?

Postby Meriasek » Sat Nov 09, 2013 5:49 am

I found this place (or, more likely, a predecessor) a long time ago when I was new to sl and gor and visited because it was a useful place to learn about Gorean RP.

It occurs to me that, although I still lurk here quite often, and post very occasionally, my reasons for so doing have completely changed.

I surveyed the list of most current articles just now, and found the following: out of 10 articles, just one was about Gorean RP (only just, actually it was about RP styles generally). The other 9 were categorised by me as:
games in general - 3
other entertainment - 1
about this forum (excluding this article of course) - 1
general/current affairs/political - 4

So it appears others may use the forum for non Gorean RP reasons, too

If I can manage the technology, I'll do a poll, but I am more interested in any comments people have. Answer the poll with (up to) your top 3 reasons for coming here.

NB. The full questions I would have liked to have asked are here, below, but amended in the poll for reasons of space:
I want to learn about Gor / Gorean RP
I want to pontificate about Gor / Gorean RP
I want to keep a finger on the pulse of SL Gor, as I don’t get out much in SL these days
Irritating though the people here are, I find the general discussions interesting
I love seeing virtual blood all over the my screen, and this place generates plenty of that on a good day
Its improving for me to read the outrageous views of ultra right-wing small government Americans/liberal European socialisers (or insert any other opinion group you do not identify with one little bit)
If I didn’t come here I wouldn’t know it was up to date to accuse others of being passive/aggressive at every opportunity
I am a sad, lonely individual and at least people interact with me here
Several years ago I made the horrible mistake of deciding to set up this forum and now I don’t know how to get out of it

Re: Should the name of this forum be changed?

Postby Mynerva » Sat Nov 09, 2013 6:07 am

No, the name of the forum should not be changed. There at times when more gorean topics are discussed, other times - not so much. People who want to open topics about gor, about gorean rp, lifestyle - or whatever is gor related are free to do so. If they do not and then whine that the things they are interested in are not being discussed? Maybe they just like whining about stuff....

A forum that exists long term as this one does will have all kinds of different topics - that is what makes it more interesting then some other places that are decicated to gor and gorean rp.

I changed the title, the question about changing the forum name was not a serious one, the article was more to understand what brings people here

I came to the earliest incarnation of this forum a very long time ago because of someone else. I didn't post much for a long time. But I was playing SL Gor at the time, and the combination of reading the books (some of them, at least) and reading that forum at that time helped my RP.

Nowadays, I come because:
1. I like pontificating in general.
2. I kind of know the people posting here and can usually see where they are coming from and can sorta tell what their opinions are worth. That old 'cheers-feeling' I guess.
3. Sometimes I learn new stuff about things I am interested in. I am still sorta interested in Gor, for some reason. The economy thread (that has been running since 2010) has posts in it that could have been in the financial times. I read overn the posts from way back a little, yesterday. And it is a good thread, especially if you gloss over the posts of the tea-party jihadists that only repeat tea-party dogma over and over again. It is a pitty that some of the old contributors (Oktober, Syndel, Pelo, etc.) have gone, however. But I pick up some interesting info from that thread still, these days (like from the latest exchange between Theoden and Kaitlin). Go to forums about economics, and you won't necessarily find threads that better, though there may be more name-dropping and detailed discussions about quantitative easing etc. in those.
I also find tips about movies, books, games and TV-shows to be quite helpful. Because I have at least one shared interest with most people here, it makes sense for us to have have similar tastes about some other things as well.

I get that some people don't like this forum, want to see it changed, resent some of the regular posters, feel there is too much talking about non-gorean topics, want this place to die, want this place to go back to how it was years ago, or whatever. I'd be happy if it stayed the way it has been for the past couple of years.

For me, the forum is now seldom of interest for Gorean rp reasons, though I do occasionally visit a sim that has been mentioned.

I really appreciate reading what Glaucon called the "tea party" views that appear here as, although I know some pretty right wing people in my own country, none are quite... well.... quite like some of the posters on here, if thats sufficiently diplomatic. I do think an occasional reminder that there are people in the world who see things so differently to oneself, and (usually) can argue their point of view coherently, is genuinely improving.

Pertsonally, I think its a shame when people who can argue intelligently, resort to insults. Without reopening the "moderation" debate, I do wonder why they feel the need to do that, and don't feel they are losing the argument in the moment they start to throw insults. But, as I ticked the "like to see blood on the screen" option, I can't really complain about that either.

I think Glaucon is right, there are some good general threads, with some good inputin them, my main problem is if I am not careful I can take all day reading them, which is also the main reason I tend rarely to contribute.

In the same time it took you to post something that had nothing to do with Gor you could have posted gorean content. I don't care that you didn't but it also shows that you don't much care either

That was rather the point of my article.

I read this forum for the general discussions, spiced with an occasional tid bit that is Gor related. I will be interested to see how the poll describes the general forum population's reasons. I suspect they are similar.

And I changed the title as it was intended to be mildly humorous or tongue in cheek, but the first response I had made me realise it would be misinterpreted as some kind of complaint (or "whine" as you so delightfully say).

It isn't just the title but also the choices you offered in the poll. There was nothing "tongue in cheek" about the dig towards the posters here. I doubt you give two shits about what attracts people.

And off we go, if there was Olympic sport in “smallest place anyone can start an argument” you’d have to be a contender.

I suspect we don’t share a similar sense of humour, Kaitlin, The options were not intended to be a dig. If they were, then I am as much a target as any other person who reads this forum regularly. Don’t assume, because I rarely post, that I don’t visit frequently.

I have just re-read the choices and, if they were meant to dig at you or anyone else, then they would also dig at me. They were just meant to get to a serious answer in a slightly light hearted way. The one exception might be the one about “passive/aggressive” (and, oh dear, I think that’s one you use :) ). I admit to grinning every time that one gets thrown around, as it seems to be “flavour of second half 2013” – there’s nothing wrong with it, it just strikes me as amusing how we got along fine without it for the previous n years. I threw it in because it amuses me, that’s all.

Don’t look for hidden agendas where there are none, I did want to know what attracts people, that’s why I stirred myself to post the article. If I had wanted deliberately to annoy, I’d have left the title and not changed it as soon as I realised it might encourage misinterpretation.

I came to talk about and discuss different gorean topics and that was several iterations of character and forums ago. Now there is not that much that has not been argued over in terms of gor except perhaps current sl gor politics etc.

I stay now because I have found to enjoy the people who contribute here even if I do not agree with them often on non gor items. I think it is good to get alternate views on different topics though I do tire from the back and forth bickering and the need to prove each other wrong rather than accepting others views, something I am guilty of myself.

I usually read these forums when one of my skype/ingame friends mentions the latest big topic that has exploded. So I come to have a look for myself and

Else, if I am really bored I'll have a browse but I am definitely more of a lurker.
