I came to the earliest incarnation of this forum a very long time ago because of someone else. I didn't post much for a long time. But I was playing SL Gor at the time, and the combination of reading the books (some of them, at least) and reading that forum at that time helped my RP.
Nowadays, I come because:
1. I like pontificating in general.
2. I kind of know the people posting here and can usually see where they are coming from and can sorta tell what their opinions are worth. That old 'cheers-feeling' I guess.
3. Sometimes I learn new stuff about things I am interested in. I am still sorta interested in Gor, for some reason. The economy thread (that has been running since 2010) has posts in it that could have been in the financial times. I read overn the posts from way back a little, yesterday. And it is a good thread, especially if you gloss over the posts of the tea-party jihadists that only repeat tea-party dogma over and over again. It is a pitty that some of the old contributors (Oktober, Syndel, Pelo, etc.) have gone, however. But I pick up some interesting info from that thread still, these days (like from the latest exchange between Theoden and Kaitlin). Go to forums about economics, and you won't necessarily find threads that better, though there may be more name-dropping and detailed discussions about quantitative easing etc. in those.
I also find tips about movies, books, games and TV-shows to be quite helpful. Because I have at least one shared interest with most people here, it makes sense for us to have have similar tastes about some other things as well.
I get that some people don't like this forum, want to see it changed, resent some of the regular posters, feel there is too much talking about non-gorean topics, want this place to die, want this place to go back to how it was years ago, or whatever. I'd be happy if it stayed the way it has been for the past couple of years.
